India set to become next open education superpower: National Skill Development Corporation

http://www.dnaindia.com/academy/report-india-set-to-become-next-open-education-superpower-national-skill-development-corporation-1921651

India is all set to become the next superpower in open education and skills, believes the CEO of National Skill Development Corporation, Dilip Chenoi.
"With the world's largest schooling and higher education infrastructures in open and distance learning system, the future of India's learning and development is obviously in the open space," Chenoi said during his Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) foundation day lecture here.
"India will be the next superpower in open education and skills," he said, even as he called for the education system to be designed in such a way that each graduate passes out with some certified vocational skills.
The above is "possible through a blended system that effectively combines open learning with vocational training and skill development programmes. For this, there is need to leverage the potential of institutions like IGNOU and NIOS," he added.
Chenoi also stressed on the need for greater public- private collaboration and global partnerships at a time when industries are looking for entrepreneurs and business leaders to come up from institutions like IGNOU.
IGNOU Vice-Chanellor M Aslam and AICTE chairman SS Mantha were also present on the occasion.

HRD minister Pallam Raju launces National Repository of Open Education Resources

NEW DELHI: The HRD minister M M Pallam Raju launched the National Repository of Open Education Resources (NROER) on Tuesday, on the occasion of the conference on ICT for School Education in New Delhi. Inaugurating the conference, he said that the school education has in the recent times witnessed immense growth.

Innovation in Education (Meeta Sengupta )

Many of our schools and colleges are still stuck in the industrial age – assembly line methods inform our pedagogy. Schools evolved from a need to feed the factories, bureaucracies and armies with people who could follow instructions and sustain repetitive processes. What was needed was a reliable part that would keep the machinery of the state or organization running smoothly. Schools responded to the needs of the employers of the day and trained students in performing task based activities, in stamina and in discipline. They learnt to respect hierarchies – which represented both power and aspiration.

Higher Education and Technology (Meeta SenGupta)

The contrast between the private sector and the state sector in Universities is stark when you look at the investments in technology. A large proportion of university classrooms look as they have for decades - large rooms, with seating arranged in traditional rows and columns, lit by a few bulbs and tube lights and a blackboard at the front. Yes, of course, they have been ‘computerised’ and many do have projectors in their classrooms. At least some classrooms. Students, in many of them have access to computers, though often it it is rationed access. Contrast this with the investments of the private sector in their universities who use these amenities to attract students to their campuses. Classroom conditions are better - acoustics, climate control, lighting, net access and of course projectors and microphones.
